Just as summer arrives, a large number of vehicles are already failing to start! Mechanic: Don't wait until it breaks down — spending 2 minutes now can save you hundreds.
The spring of 2026 was one of the warmest in over a century. As the weather heats up, everyone starts planning road trips, mountain rides on motorcycles, and towing boats to the lake.
But have you noticed — suddenly, more and more people on social media are posting about their cars breaking down?
Many people think winter is the "danger zone" for batteries. Hard starting, power loss, failure to crank — that feels normal. But the truth is: summer is the real killer of batteries.
An auto mechanic with over a decade of experience told me: Every year from June to August, he gets more emergency calls than in winter. Most car owners are baffled — "My car was fine in winter, so why is it failing in the heat?"
Don't panic. Spend 3 minutes to understand why summer actually damages batteries more.
What your battery went through in winter:
① In cold weather, the chemical reactions inside the battery slow down — it simply can't deliver full power.
② In winter, you often drive short trips (school runs, commuting), and the engine doesn't run long enough to fully recharge the battery.
③ Many cars sit idle for a month or two in winter — the battery is constantly draining (alarm, clock, dashcam all consume power).
By spring, your car starts normally, so you assume everything is fine. But the battery is already weakened — the warmer weather just creates an illusion.
Then comes summer:
① High temperatures accelerate internal self-discharge and can even corrode the plates.
② You start using the car more frequently — running the A/C, blasting the stereo — the battery struggles to keep up.
③ One day, parked by the roadside, you try to start the engine — click, click, click... nothing.
A hard truth: Most batteries aren't worn out from use — they die from neglect and heat.
Spend 10 minutes before your summer trip and do these 6 things — it could save you from being stranded halfway.
✅ 1. Check the voltage before starting
Use a multimeter or your car's cigarette lighter voltage display. A healthy 12V battery should read above 12.5V when off. Below 12V, charge it before starting.
✅ 2. If the car has been sitting for more than two weeks, charge it
Buy a smart charger (around 100-200 RMB). Plug it in overnight. Don't use an old "dumb charger" — it could overcharge and swell the battery.
✅ 3. For large-displacement vehicles, off-roaders, and boats — use a high-power charger
Performance cars, modified vehicles, and boat batteries have higher capacity. A standard small charger won't fully charge them. Borrow or buy a more powerful charger to get the job done properly.
✅ 4. For vehicles you don't drive often, use a "maintenance charger"
If you have two cars you rotate between, or only ride your motorcycle on weekends, buy an automatic maintenance charger. It automatically stops when full and tops up when low. A small investment (just a few dozen RMB) can extend battery life from 2 years to 4-5 years.
✅ 5. Clean the terminals
Pop the hood and check for white powder (corrosion) on the positive and negative terminals. If present, rinse with hot water and apply a little grease. Poor contact will ruin even the best battery.
✅ 6. Keep a portable jump starter in your trunk
These have dropped to around 100-200 RMB. They're the size of your palm and can also charge your phone. If your car won't start, clamp it on and you'll be running in a minute. A small price for peace of mind — far cheaper than calling a tow truck.
A final honest word:
Many car owners think, "If the battery dies, just replace it." A new battery isn't that expensive — maybe 300-400 RMB.
But try being stuck at a highway rest area, a remote campsite, or a parking lot on a rainy night — with no one around to help. That feeling isn't something money can fix.
Summer is here. You might be planning a family trip for next weekend.
Spend 10 minutes and run through these 6 things.
Don't let a weak battery ruin your first summer getaway this year.
