Release Date:March 16, 2026

At the recently concluded InterBattery 2026 exhibition in Seoul, Samsung SDI publicly unveiled for the first time its pouch-type all-solid-state battery sample developed for humanoid robots and other physical AI applications, alongside new high-output battery solutions for AI data centers. This marks a critical milestone in the company's commercialization roadmap for next-generation battery technologies.

【Solid-State Batteries for Humanoid Robots: Lightweight Design Meets High Safety】

As the humanoid robotics industry accelerates, its battery requirements diverge significantly from traditional electric vehicle applications: extremely limited installation space, stringent safety demands, and stable high-output performance. Samsung SDI's pouch-type all-solid-state battery showcased at the exhibition is specifically engineered to address these challenges:

Lightweight Design: The pouch format enables flexible form factor adaptation while maintaining energy density, accommodating the compact interior space requirements of robots
Inherent Safety: The all-solid-state electrolyte fundamentally eliminates thermal runaway risks, meeting the rigorous safety standards of physical AI applications
High-Output Performance: Balances energy density with power density to support instantaneous power demands in high-dynamic robot motion scenarios

According to Samsung SDI's roadmap, the product is scheduled for mass production in the second half of 2027, targeting applications in humanoid robots, specialized robotics, and aviation systems.

【AI Data Center Batteries: Responding to the Computing Power Explosion】

With the explosive growth in global AI computing power demand, the need for highly reliable, high-power backup power solutions in data centers has surged. Samsung SDI introduced two specialized battery products for AI data center applications:

1. UPS Battery U8A1
- Features lithium manganese oxide (LMO) cathode material
- 33% higher energy density compared to conventional products
- 33% improved space efficiency, enabling higher power density within limited rack space
- Designed for uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems to ensure power continuity for critical loads

2. BBU High-Output Battery
- Utilizes high-nickel NCA cathode with silicon-carbon nanocomposite anode
- Extends backup runtime by over 50%
- Optimized for server rack battery backup unit (BBU) applications, providing instantaneous support during grid fluctuations or power source switching

【Industry Perspective】

Samsung SDI's product portfolio clearly reveals two emerging trends in the global battery industry:

First, humanoid robots represent a critical breakthrough opportunity for solid-state battery commercialization. Unlike electric vehicles' pursuit of cost and range, humanoid robots' higher demands for safety and form factor flexibility provide a more favorable entry point for solid-state battery commercialization.

Second, AI data centers are emerging as a new growth frontier for battery demand. As investment in computing infrastructure continues to intensify, the market for UPS and BBU batteries is rapidly expanding, opening another blue ocean opportunity beyond electric vehicles for battery manufacturers.

Samsung SDI President Choi Yoon-ho stated at the exhibition: "We are witnessing a historic moment as battery applications expand from electric vehicles into broader territories. Samsung SDI will continue to provide core power for future industries including AI and robotics through sustained technological innovation."
